The Way One Falls: Oscar Edition

oscarstatue_2448179bPrince Richard: [the sons – in the dungeon – think they hear Henry approach] He’s here. He’ll get no satisfaction out of me. He isn’t going to see me beg.
Prince Geoffrey: My you chivalric fool… as if the way one fell down mattered.
Prince Richard: When the fall is all there is, it matters.
~”The Lion in Winter” (1968)

If you love old movies or watch too much Aaron Sorkin, who seems to love The Lion in the Winter because he quotes in almost every show he writes, you’re probably familiar with that quote about falling.

Last night’s Academy Awards gave two beautiful examples of grace after a fall: one metaphoric, one quite literal.

Ben Affleck made Good Will Hunting in 1997. He made Gigli in 2003. Last night, he won Best Picture for Argo. That’s a fall and then some, followed by quite a comeback.

Then poor, sweet Jennifer Lawrence, actually fell. I mean, the girl went and bit it on her way up the stairs to accept her award.

Then she gave this interview backstage afterwards. Could she have a better attitude? I adore this precious creature.

In a world where we all fall down, may each of us have the grace to laugh it off when we can, learn what we should, and sometimes if you need it…grab yourself a shot!
